Rising Stars

Our intermediate program is for students entering grades 4, 5, or 6 in the 2010 - 2011 school year.  It offers a variety of activities in the performing arts.  Students will participate in daily dance, acting, and voice classes, develop improvisation skills in daily warm-ups, and begin to learn about the business of theatre.  Our Rising Stars program is a great way to envelop students in all types of theatre activities – from auditions and character development, to dance and music – all to inspire a better understanding and appreciation for the craft, while developing natural ability.

What do we do each day?

Daily Schedule ( 9am to 4pm )

  9:00      Warm-up & Morning Meeting

We begin each day with physical and vocal warm-ups, improvisation, and a whole camp morning meeting.

  9:30 – 12:30   Class Rotations

Our mornings are busy with acting, improvisation, dance, and music lessons.  The four age groups rotate through these sessions every 45 minutes.  Emphasis is on training actors & developing skills.  We are interested in helping the students to grow and learn more about themselves.  Classes include warm-ups, drills & skills, practice in multiple genres, and development of performance pieces.

12:30 – Lunch & Study

After a break for lunch & fellowship, actors are encouraged to use this time for personal study and reflection.  It is a time for “homework” – learning lines, developing a character, practicing scenes, songs, and dances.  This time for self-discovery is crucial in the actor’s development.

1:30 – Master Classes & Rehearsal

Our afternoons are filled with activity.  During the first part of each session, professionals working in theatre may visit with students and present a class in a specialized field:  African Dance, tap, ballet, or modern dance; mime, improvisation, make-up, or puppetry; design, lighting, props, or stage management.  Students will be exposed to a variety of jobs in the theatre.

As we get closer to our performance dates, afternoons will be spent rehearsing our performance pieces, designing sets & costumes, and preparing for our summer showcase!

  3:45 – Group Meeting & Reflection

To gain closure each day, students will gather in an informal meeting to chat about the day’s events.  It is a time for reflection on the day – expressing thoughts & ideas about the learning, and planning where to go next.  Sharing ideas with one another improves communication and extends learning.  It is a calm, reflective, and meaningful way to end the day.

All classes are held at the Downstairs Cabaret Theatre Center
540 East Main Street
(near the corner of Scio Street ).
